Noah leaned back in his Harvey Miller chair and rested his feet on his desk. Sweet Pea snuggled in his lap, apparently convinced she wasnât going to get any more Cheetos nubs.
The realization that his evening conversation with Laurel had become the high point of his day both frightened and thrilled him. âIâm hoping your day was less frustrating than mine.â
âWhy, what was wrong with yours?â
âI had to talk to a dying old lady who was positive her husband didnât commit suicide.â
âWhy did she think that? I thought he took pills.â
âWho knows? No one wants to admit a loved one chose to leave them. Just to be sure, I checked Doc Mâs autopsy report. He signed off that Anders Lunde took his own life.â
âPoor lady. That would have to be hard to accept.â
âI wish I could have suggested she get you to sell her house, but sheâs leaving it to Saint Judeâs.â
âIâm glad you didnât. The ethics would be questionable. Besides, dealing with that mess would be a nightmare. Who knows if she even filed probate after her husband died? Saint Judeâs must have an army of lawyers who could sort out that stuff. After all that sorrow, I kind of like the idea of sick children benefiting.â
Yeah, he did too. Something good should come from so much death. Amazing how often he and Laurel thought alike. âYou never told me about your day.â
âAh, well, this should make you feel better. Henry Agard is approximately five-eleven and the reason Earl couldnât find him is because he left an A out of his name.â
Damn. Thatâs what he forgot the other dayâto insist she stay away from anything to do with Agardâbut sheâd just given him the first break heâd had in days. âYou mean Earl made a typo when searching for his license?â
âActually he left out three As. Although heâs used Henry Agard the last twenty years for business, his real name is Hans Aagaard. Spelled A.A.G.A.A.R.D. The height is a guess from when I hugged him but you should be able to get it from his license.â
Oh, fuck no. Laurel got close enough to hug him? This was dangerous and he didnât mean just her meeting with Agard. He needed to be extra careful about the next words that came out of his mouth. âI thought we agreed you werenât going to get personally involved in this case.â
âI didnât mean to. I bumped into him when I was shopping at City Center and he called out to me.â
Then why did he hear that little hiccup in her voice?
âI got the rest of the information off the computer. He didnât have any idea I was checking up on him. Although Iâm stumped as to why youâre interested.â
âIâm not that interested. I just wanted to know how tall he was so I could figure out where the shooter was standing. When Earl couldnât pull up his license, my Spidey senses started to tingle. Now that I have an explanation, Iâm satisfied.â Did
